HIP SCORING AND ELBOW SCORING
The British Veterinary Association and the Kennel club have teamed up to run a scheme aimed at reducing genetically transmitted Hip and Elbow dysplasia in dogs.
At Portland Veterinary Surgery we are able to use our very fast and accurate digital x ray machine to take the xrays required for participation in the scheme.
If you are intending to breed your dog it will be one of the responsible precautions you will need to take.
THe following is the proceedure
1. Your dog must be a minimum of 1 year old
2. Your dog should be booked in for a day stay at the surgery
3. He/she will need a general anaesthetic and extremely precise x rays taken of his/her hips/elbows. On the day of the surgery you will need to provide for us your dogs kennel club registration certificate as well as a cheque made out to the BVA to accompany the x rays.
4. The x rays are sent to a panel of veterinary surgeons who score the hips/elbows and send a certificate back to the practice.
The time from x rays to certificate can be up to 6-8 weeks so it is important to get results before you intend to mate your dog.
The lower the scores the better and so breeders wishing to reduce the risk of disease should select their breeding stock(both dogs and bitches) only from animals with scores well below the breed mean score.
If you would like to know more about hip or elbow scoring please contact the surgery for more information. Alternatively see the kennel club website http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/313.
The kennel club also offer details on some of the more specific dna screening now available for many genetically inherited disease.
